Botox is a 900-kDa formulation of botulinum neurotoxin type A. It has been used to treat facial wrinkles since the early 1990’s and is the most studied neuromuscular blocking agent currently marketed for cosmetic applications. Currently, Botox is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of spasms, dystonia, excessive sweating (i.e. hyperhidrosis), chronic migraine, and wrinkles between the eyebrows and forehead. Botox takes approximately 7-10 days for optimal effects to be present, and lasts 3 to 4 months.
